Brief Description
The site is owned by Thames Water Utilities and is on a long lease to The Crossness Engines Trust. The Trust is an enthusiastic group of volunteers who have restored the steam engines and established an exhibition entitled the ‘Great Stink’ which documents the work of Sir Joseph Bazalgette in removing the huge public health problems in London. This was a combination of co-ordinating new sewers with the existing system and installing steam driven pumps to remove the sewage further away from the capital and out to sea. Many of the buildings and steam driven pumps have been restored and are operational on open days. A new exhibition and education rooms have been established. All are heated by a central biomass boiler rated at 250kW. The boiler utilises wood pellets, heating being distributed across the site via pre-insulated heat mains.
