Brief Description

St Mary de Crypt dates from the late 15th Century and has one of the few remaining Tudor schoolrooms in England adjacent to it. The church is significant for its association with famous people, the most known of which was Jemmy Wood, a penny-pinching character thought to have inspired Dickens’ Scrooge.

A redevelopment programme was implemented to restore the Church and Schoolroom, funded by HLF and other sources and headed by the Princes Foundation Trust.
